UPDATE: FEBRUARY 2026: I’ve been in Denmark for the last two months with my wife, stage artist Lotte Arnsbjerg. We were married in August and I’ve never been happier! I’ve played a few shows (under my own name, with Big Creek Slim, and with the awesome DK piano man Esben Just) but mostly concentrated recovering from my grueling tour schedule in 2024 and 2025. Salman Ayan Bandish, my wife, and I developed a play, “The Call of Loneliness”, which premieres 2.22 at Biblioteket Rentemestervej in Copenhagen. I am playing guitar all the way through it and have some original songs featured in it– it’s exciting and a moving work on what’s really a public health epidemic.

LATER IN 26: I’ll be running the Chicago Blues Guitar Workshop, May 31-June 5, along with co-instructors Billy Flynn, Noah Wotherspoon, Aki Kumar, Yoshimi Hirata, and band coach/drummer Marty Binder. These are all GREAT teachers as well as trememdous musicians. I have a tour in Mexico in March, an East Coast tour in May. In June I’m also returning to teach and perform at the Göhren Blues Camp in Germany. Watch for PNW/CA dates in September, Midwest dates in October, and some great festival and club appearances in Denmark and northern Europe.

JAN 2023: WORKSHOPS:  This year, I’ll be back for the third year in a row as the Electric Guitar instructor at The Pinetop Perkins Foundation Workshop in Clarksdale MS.  I’ll teach my own Chicago Blues Guitar Workshop June 1-6 in Chicago along with Billy Flynn and Noah Wotherspoon (and bass instructor Yoshimi Hirata), and I’ll teach at the Göhren Blues Camp in Germany.

It was a big honor to be nominated for a 2023 BMA for Best Traditional Blues Artist along with JOHN PRIMER, BILLY BRANCH, DUKE ROBILLARD and SUGAR RAY NORCIA.   In ’24 I was nominated for two Blues Blast Awards, one for Best Video (for Ramblin’ From Coast to Coast) and one for Best Traditional Blues Album.   Thank you!

Finally we get to celebrate “No Border Blues Japan” in Japan!  Released on Delmark records, No Border Blues is the first American compilation of the underground Japanese blues scene.  I did play on all of it and sing on some of it, but this recording is first and foremost a sampling of some of Japan’s best blues players.  The 70s concerts of  hard-core Chicago blues artists such as Eddie Taylor, Otis Rush, Robert Lockwood, and others inspired the first generation of Japanese blues players.  Forty years later,  Japan’s little live houses still percolate with tightly-knit micro-scenes of players– both male and female–  with no big gigs to compete for, no blues awards, and practically no payment to speak of– just an egalitarian group of talented, soulful, disciplined and dedicated blues musicians.  Pianist and singer Lee Kanehira may be known to the blues audience for her work with The Cash Box Kings, and guitarist Minoru Maruyama is a long time Chicago resident who’s worked with Billy Branch and many others, but the majority of the twelve Japanese artist sampled on this disc are unknown outside of their “mesmerized clusters” of blues fans in Osaka, Tokyo, Kobe and Kytoto.   Check out the Chicago Sun-Times feature from 7.30 here.   Here’s a fun video of me doing “Old School Player” from the record posted on the Vintage Guitar site which links to a rave review.   No Border Blues garnered a lot of radio play as well;  it held the top three spots on the Oregon and the Chicago Blues Roots Music Reports for months, hit #5 on the Living Blues radio chart, and #13 on the Top 50 Blues Albums from Roots Music Report.  People are intrigued by the surprising inter-generational nature of the fervent Japanese blues scene– check out www.noborderblues.com for  more background on the featured artists.  And if you are an international blues arist, writer, dj, or just a fan,  join our “No Border Blues” facebook group where artists are encouraged to post their work.
